    MOSS Variations Help

Can anyone help find any good sources of information on MOSS Variations. All of the information I have come by so far seems to be very few and far between.

I am interested in finding out more about how we might use variations in a project.

I have a site that supplies information and product search functionality to vairous countries. The content itself needs to be translated by our other areas of the business and was using variations to provide alternative content.

I have a few questions about what can and can't be done with variations:

Can a list be propergated out when created in the source variation in the same way that if a page was created it would be created for each variation?

If so can I use Translatable columns to provide alternative column headers for the variations and how?

I am trying to build a list that holds the menu structure and generates the menu dynmaically depending on the contents of the list. This structure is able to vary depending on the country it is displayed in allowing each variation to have an alternative site structure. Is it feasible using variations, list and column translations or is what I am trying to do too complex for the functionality available in MOSS?

Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

    Paul

    Re: MOSS Variations Help

Hi. I have a lot of experience with Site Variations and multilingual sites.

Variations push out page content fields to those same page content fields in a duplicate site. Sites and Pages can be duplicated if they don't already exist.

The extra site elements you mention won't be propagated by the site variation feature.

Translatable columns (in variations) dictate what is exported when Variations are exported into CAB files for external translation.

If you want a chat about this, send us a message and we'll sort it.

    Re: MOSS Variations Help

    Hello,

I have a site called “en-us” and I need to create 10+ variations of it for different countries.

When I create the variation all relative links with in the content stay the same. For example

/en-us/Products/..  does not change to: en-GR/products/…  it stays the same.

I was under the impression that variations would automatically update all relative links and URL’s within the site. Is that true?

If not is there an easy way in SharePoint Designer 2007 to use something like Find and Replace for the entire site instead of having to go in to each page and do it manually?

Any help and response would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.
