    Brand New User

    Hi,

We will be getting Sharepoint site to manage and hopefully will be getting some very basic training (HopefullY).  What I would like to understand is how can I gain some of the knowledge on how you use sharepoint and how can I share what I learn to others.

Welcome aboard. Normally I would suggest you go and get yourself a teach yourself in 24 hours book, but you can probably start here and then go and buy a book once you've tried your hand at some of the Microsoft material.

    Hi Suzy,

The Microsoft site itself contains some good material. What type of training / learning are you looking for? (Technical, Administration, Site Management?)

If your organisation (ask IT!) have an MSDN or TechNet subscription then nearly all the above can be consumed from the Microsoft sites.

In terms of books, I can send you a list if you reply and let me know the "role" you will be undertaking, just so I dont send you the wrong level / type of books.    Nick

    Suzy,

Also, if you are looking after the site from an admin point of view, try this book:-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/0735622825/ref=s9_asin_image_1/202-9510892-1935010?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1ASKGCC23KAAG1S80B2R&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=125824291&pf_rd_i=468294

It is a Microsoft book, but it hits the mark if your responsibility area is system management.

    Regards

    Nick

    Re: Brand New User

I would get some books as well as the basic training.

If you are using WSS 3.0 I can recommend Step by Step Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services by Bill English et al

If you are using WSS 3.0 with MOSS 2007 I can recommend SharePoint 2007 for Dummies by Vanessa Williams

There are a lot of SharePoint books on my shelf but these two are the easiest and best to get up to speed quickly.

It will help you to understand that this is a web browser based appliaction based on Microsoft IIS web server with data stored in an SQL database (Express version or SQL Server 200X)

It is easy for people to use SharePoint but also know that because it is based on several technologies it can be difficult to troubleshoot and supporting SharePoint requires a wide spread of knowledge
